Red Star – Napoli: joining the elite
Date: 19-09-2018
After 26 of years of absence from elite European competitions, FC Red Star will once again compete in Champions League. Red Star took the Champions Cup in 1991, but after competing in the following year, the club didn’t reenter the elite until this year, although it was on the brink of qualifying several times. After winning against Salzburg in qualifications, Red Star will play in the Group C with Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Liverpool, with the first match to be played being the one against Napoli in Belgrade.
Big Hopes, despite all
Match will take place on September 18th in Belgrade. During the last season in Italy, Napoli was close to winning the championship, finishing just four points behind Juventus. Napoli is the favorite in Group C, with all the bookmakers giving the Italian team much better chances in Belgrade, with odds of about 8.5 to 1 for Red Star victory and just 1.40 for Red Star.
Somewhat unexpected progress of Red Star to Champions League was a pleasant surprise for owners of seasonal passes, as they will pay just 50% of ticket price. A package of tickets for all three matches in Belgrade costs 7.500 RSD for north and south stands, 12.000 RSD for the flanks of the eastern stand, 15.000 RSD for the central part of the eastern stand as well as for the western flanks and finally 18.000 RSD for center-west.
A third place as a second chance
Along Plzen, AEK, Galatasaray, Shakthar, CSKA and Lokomotiv, Red Star is one of seven clubs from Eastern Europe in this phase of Champions League. If Red Star fails to finish in first two places and continue the competition, but finishes third, Red Star will go to Europa League and still have the chance to play against other European clubs in the spring.
