Serbia – Georgia on Oct 9, World Cup qualifiers

Date: 08-09-2017

World Cup qualifiers are for some reason easier for Serbian football team than the European Cup qualifiers. Serbia has almost booked the place in the cup in Russia next year, and the last game in the group will be played on October 9th in Belgrade, with the opponent being Georgia, the team which is already out of the competition. The match Serbia – Georgia will be a great opportunity to say thanks to the national team before the tournament in Russia.

Situation in the group

After victory over Ireland, Serbia is now in the first place in group D with 18 points. Serbian team didn’t lose a match during the qualifiers, and has an excellent goal difference, something not common in Serbia’s former squads. The second and the third place are filled by Wales and Ireland, with 14 and 13 points, while Austria also has the theoretical chance to get to the second place, as it has nine points.

Serbia needs only four points – one win and a draw – from the last two matches, first being the away match with Austria on October 6th, and than on home ground with Georgia three days later. The battle for the second place in the group will be fierce, with group D being one of the most contested ones.

The most realistic scenario is the one in which Wales and Ireland will both pick up three points in next round, as both teams have the necessary motivation and relatively week opponents – Georgia and Moldavia, the only two teams without already out of the race. In that case Wales and Ireland will slug it out in the last round in Cardiff. If by any case Serbia losses the match against Austria, the whole group will enter the photo-finish, but that is not likely if the recent performances are to be our guide.

The match in Belgrade will be quite a spectacle, as it is most likely that the Red Star stadium will be completely filled. Although coach Muslin will probably have the opportunity to rest some key players, we expect to see the squad in it’s best, so supporters can wave the team off to Russia in the best possible way. The game with Georgia is most likely to be one of the main football events of the year, together with the matches Partizan and Red Star will play this fall in the Europa League.
